Thanks for this graph Carl. Evidently there is a broad correlation between global and arctic temperature indicative of a fast transport or mixing mechanism via the atmosphere. The 97/98 El Nino is, however, a clear outlier. If you have a rapid coupling operating how come this major global warming event does not show up in the Artic temperature? Pretty complicated stuff.

Dear Dr.Carl Wolk:

How do you do? I am a researcher of fuel cell and a skeptic in
Japan. Your idea seems to me very interesting for understanding of stratosphere cooling. I would like to discuss with you more by e-mail. My critical paper will be published in
Energy&Environment soon as to CO2 GW theory.
Best regards,
Kyoji Kimoto

Maybe, but I'm not the guy to talk to. Email Anthony Watts or ask on his blog.
You've got to look for the raw USHCN data; that's where GISS gets it's US data from. I don't know why GHCN would mess with US network data, but I'm leaving my climate comfort zone now so I could be wrong.
And just for the hell of it:

Any way to see the raw surface station data before it goes through the GHCN and GISTemp manipulations?

Sorry, forgot to post that. The SST data is te Smith Reynolds data from NOAA. For instructions to extract the SST data, see my post: http://climatechangeskeptic.wordpress.com/2008/07/09/comparing-noaa-sst-data-to-uah-and-rss/

The surface stations can be located using this GISS page:
